What California Is Deciding in 2026: An Open Governor's Race and Every House Seat

With Gov. Newsom term-limited, California's 2026 ballot is headed by the race to succeed him, plus contests for all of the state's U.S. House seats — and no U.S. Senate race this year.

What California Is Deciding in 2026: An Open Governor's Race and Every House Seat (Fresno Raisin City News)

California's 2026 election carries a distinction the state has not seen in years: an open race for governor at the top of the ballot. Gov. Gavin Newsom is term-limited, which means Fresno County voters are helping choose a new chief executive for the nation's most populous state rather than judging an incumbent's record. Open races draw crowded fields and genuine uncertainty, and they tend to reshape the politics beneath them all the way down the ballot.

Also before voters are contests for all of California's seats in the U.S. House of Representatives, the delegation that carries the state's interests in Washington. The House races in and around the San Joaquin Valley matter beyond their districts, because control of the chamber shapes federal decisions on water, agriculture, transportation and health care that land directly in Fresno County. Notably, California has no U.S. Senate race in 2026, a gap that puts even more weight on the governor's contest and the House map.

Statewide and legislative contests share the ballot with county and local questions, which makes the mailed ballot, sent to every active registered voter, a long document worth reading at home rather than rushing through at a vote center. Voters who do their homework with the mailed ballot in hand can still vote in person if they prefer, bringing the marked ballot as a guide or surrendering it and voting at the center instead.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3, with polls and vote centers open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mail ballots count if postmarked by Nov. 3 and received by Nov. 10, or if returned in person to a vote center, drop box or the county elections office by 8 p.m. Tuesday. Conditional registration remains available at vote centers and the elections office through Election Day for eligible residents who missed the Oct. 19 deadline.

Whatever the outcomes, 2026 will send a new governor to Sacramento and a full House delegation to Washington with a fresh mandate from voters including hundreds of thousands in Fresno County. That is a consequential Tuesday by any measure, and it begins with the unglamorous act of marking a ballot, at a kitchen table or a vote center, before 8 p.m.
