Selland Arena Nights: Fresno's Old Barn Gears Up for the Winter Sports Season
Selland Arena, downtown Fresno's veteran indoor venue, has hosted everything from Bulldog basketball history to hockey and concerts — and winter is its season.

Selland Arena is Fresno's indoor landmark, a downtown arena that has served the city since the 1960s and carries a depth of local memory few buildings match. Generations of valley fans watched Fresno State basketball in this building before the program moved to its on-campus arena, and the Selland floor has also hosted hockey, rodeos, concerts and commencements, the full catalog of a working American arena.
Winter is when arenas earn their keep, and Selland's calendar reflects it: indoor sports, shows and community events stack up as the weather cools outside. The building's downtown location ties it into the convention center complex and the Courthouse Park area, so event nights ripple outward into downtown restaurants and parking structures in a way suburban arenas cannot replicate.
Arena buildings age differently from other civic structures because their value is measured in nights used. Selland's longevity is itself the story: a mid-sized California city built an arena in the 1960s and is still filling it in 2026, through renovations, changing leagues and changing tastes. Fans who attended games here as children now bring grandchildren, and the rituals, parking in the same lots, entering through the same doors, are part of the product.
Fresno State's basketball heritage in the building deserves its own mention. The Bulldogs' years at Selland produced some of the program's most remembered teams and crowds, and the arena remains a reference point whenever valley fans debate the great eras of local basketball. Places accumulate meaning that way, one season at a time, until the building and the memories are inseparable.
As the winter schedule fills, Selland Arena resumes its old role: Fresno's living room on cold nights. The city has newer buildings, but it has no other room with this one's history, and November is when the lights come up again.
